Building practical capacity for GHG management and climate action in the apparel supply chain
As the fashion industry accelerates its transition toward a low-carbon future, manufacturers need the knowledge, tools, and internal capacity to understand their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and translate climate commitments into measurable action.
As a signatory to the UN Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action, HUGO BOSS has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions across its operations and value chain. Supporting suppliers in understanding emissions, establishing credible GHG inventories, and identifying opportunities for decarbonisation is an important part of turning these ambitions into factory-level action.
Engineering Resources International (ERI) supported this journey by delivering Climate Action Training (CAT) to HUGO BOSS supplier factories. Drawing on ERI’s experience as a Training of Trainers (ToT) participant under GIZ and UNFCCC climate action initiatives, the programme was designed to strengthen the practical climate-management capabilities of factory teams.
The training went beyond climate awareness, focusing on the technical competencies manufacturers need to measure, manage, and ultimately reduce their carbon footprint. Participants were introduced to internationally recognised GHG accounting principles and their practical application within apparel and textile manufacturing facilities.
The programme covered key areas including organisational and operational boundary setting, identification of emission sources, Scope 1, Scope 2 and relevant Scope 3 emissions, activity-data collection, emission-factor application, GHG calculations, development of emission inventories, and identification of potential reduction opportunities.
Through practical exercises, examples and technical guidance, participants strengthened their ability to translate energy and operational data into meaningful climate information that can support corporate reporting, target setting and decarbonisation planning.
A central objective of the programme was to build internal capability rather than simply transfer information. Factory professionals gained a clearer understanding of where emissions originate, how they should be quantified, and how GHG data can be used to inform climate-action priorities.

ERI has provided climate action training and technical support to more than 100 factories, contributing to stronger climate-management capacity across Bangladesh's apparel and textile supply chain.
