Apparel Innovation Consortium (AIC) – Resource Efficiency & Sustainable Manufacturing Programme

Engineering Resources International (ERI) Ltd. collaborated with Impact Economy SA, Switzerland, under the Apparel Innovation Consortium (AIC) initiative to demonstrate how resource efficiency investments can simultaneously improve environmental performance, working conditions, and the economic competitiveness of Bangladesh’s textile and garment industry.

ERI provided end-to-end technical support across three pilot factories, covering baseline assessment, identification and financial evaluation of improvement opportunities, development of factory-specific implementation plans, implementation support, performance monitoring, and capacity building. The programme addressed four key areas: energy efficiency, water efficiency, chemical management, and waste reduction, with targeted reductions of 20–40% in energy use, 25–50% in water use, and 10–20% in chemical use, depending on identified factory opportunities.

The interventions included process optimisation, energy-efficient technologies, variable frequency drives, servo motors, LED lighting, heat recovery, boiler and steam-system improvements, condensate recovery, water reuse and conservation measures, metering and resource monitoring, chemical management improvements, and solid-waste reuse and recycling. ERI also evaluated investment requirements, potential savings, and return on investment (ROI) to establish the business case for implementation.

The programme progressed beyond assessment into implementation of identified efficiency measures. Under the subsequent agreement, ERI supported procurement and installation of resource-efficient equipment and technologies across the participating factories, helping translate assessment findings into practical factory-level improvements.
